Housing: Here are some sites that provide information on apartments in Ames and on the ISU campus.

Students who are from out-of-state may keep their out-of-state status. You are not required to change driver's license, car plates, or location for voting. If you are interested in changing your driver's license and license plates check out this site: State of Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Information Kit. There is a DVM office in Ames.

International students can find the Iowa driver's manual here.

Voting: You can contact your state for an absentee ballot. You may also choose to change your residency to Iowa to vote. Here is the website for registering to vote in Iowa. In Iowa you may also register to vote on the day of the election at your polls.

New Student Orientation Checklist

1. If the transcript you sent during the application process was not the final transcript, send a final transcript after completion of your degree to Graduate Admissions, 100 Alumni Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011-2011. This needs to arrive no later than September 30.

2. Rotation Students. If you will be participating in rotations, please begin contacting faculty about possible rotations before arrival at ISU. We would like for you to have a good idea of your first rotation lab before classes begin. You will be assigned a temporary advisor who can also assist you with

3. Payroll. Domestic Students. Bring your social security card and driver's license or items as listed on the I-9 form, page 3. Domestic students will report to Human Resources in 3810 Beardshear no later than the first day of their letter of intent start date. You may go to 3810 Beardshear earlier. In addition to acceptable documents for employment eligibility verification, please print the payroll sign-up packet and fill out all forms before going to Human Resources to sign up for payroll.

3. Payroll. International Students. Check in with International students upon arrival in Ames. Pre-arrival information can be found here. You may also want to fill out a tax treaty document which affects the amount of money deducted from your paycheck for taxes.

4. University ID card. Go to 0530 Beardshear Hall

5. University Email account. Take your University ID card and go to 195 Durham Hall. Someone in this room will help you go through the steps to obtain a Univrsity Email account. Be thinking about an appropriate email "name"; the one you chose will be yours for the remainder of your graduate training. If you prefer to continue using a prsent email address (such as yahoo.com or hotmail.com or gmail.com) as a contact point you may do so. Please note that ISU class lists will only print out ISU email addresses a as means of contact for faculty.

6. Advise toxmajor@iastate.edu of your University email address and local (Ames) address and phone number.

6. OSHA Lab Standard Training. This training should be completed by the end of the first week of classes. You may complete this training on-line.
