Interdepartmental Toxicology Graduate Program - M.S./Ph.D.

Molecular Biology Building

Research Assistantships

As a rule, Interdepartmental Toxicology will not admit a student unless that student has some type of financial support from the University through either an RA (research assistantship) or TA (teaching assistantship). Toxicology generally has funding to support 3 or 4 new students each year. Selection of students for these assistantships is based on faculty interest in the application. Assistantships pay from about $1500 to $1800 per month for generally twelve months of the year.

Fellowships: Toxicology applicants may be eligible for various Fellowships depending upon their academic achievements, research interests, and testing scores. All applicants are considered for all available Fellowships for which they are eligible. For all Fellowships, the program recommends the applicant to the Fellowship Committees. No additional forms need to be filled out, other than the complete graduate student application to the Toxicology program. For example, a student maybe eligible for ISU Biotechnology Fellowships, IGERT Fellowships in Computational Biology, Graduate Minority Assistant Program (GMAPS), George Washington Carver Fellowships (GWC), Miller Fellowships or Plant Science Institute Fellowships (PSI).

Tuition and Fees: All students admitted to the Ph.D. program who are on an at least a 1/2 time research or teaching assistantship and maintain a 3.0 GPA receive a 100% tuition scholarship. All students admitted to the M.S. program who are on at least a 1/2 time research or teaching assistanship and maintain a 3.0 GPA receive a 50% tuition scholarship; students are responsible for the remainder of their tuition. All students pay fees. Tuition support is based on maintaining a 3.0 GPA and making good progress towards completion of your degree.

Health Insurance: All students on at least 1/4 time assistantships received paid single health insurance.

Dental Insurance is available for a fee.

Graduate Assistant Pharmacy Program Coverage paid for students on at least 1/4 time assistantship: Prescription coverage that allows participants to pay either a $7 copay for preferred products or a $14 copay for non-preferred products from the Thielen Student Health Center Pharmacy.

We have tried to give a picture of the financial opportunities available to prospective students. Students will not be admitted as full-time students without financial support. Students on assistantships receive tuition scholarships, health insurance, and pharmacy coverage. All applicants are considered for all Fellowships for which they are eligible. For international applicants assistantships offered and tuition scholarships are considered sufficient by the University for living and educational expenses for the student; an international applicant would not need to prove additional support unless they are bringing family with them.

If there are other areas of financial consideration you believe are important to your decision to apply to our program, please let us know (toxmajor@iastate.edu) and we will try and add that information to this website.
